From medical certifications to intermittent leave requests, following the rules of the Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) can be tricky business.

What's even more challenging for many California employers—beyond the issues of time off—is managing the unexpected ways FMLA and CFRA can affect the way you pay your employees and administer their benefits.

Do the family leave laws require you to pay employees on leave? Must you continue their health insurance and other benefits—and who picks up the premiums while your workers are off the clock? When can you legally refuse an employee's request to substitute paid leave for FMLA/CFRA leave? Do you have to pay a full bonus to a manager or supervisor who missed weeks of work during the bonus period?

Join us for our Dec. 18 audio conference, when our speaker—a nationally recognized, California-based employment law attorney—will walk you through the minefield of pay, bonus, and benefits problems associated with FMLA and CFRA leave. She'll give you plain-English explanations for the many ways FMLA and CFRA regulations affect how you pay and provide benefits to your workforce. Plus, she'll share her experiences in helping employers around California solve real-world cases involving the fine print of these laws.

YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES WILL LEARN:

  • The most common mistakes California employers make in managing pay, bonuses, and benefits for workers on family and medical leave
  • When it's legal to substitute accrued paid leave for unpaid (and why it matters whether you or your employee requests the substitution)
  • Which benefits you must continue to offer workers on leave—and which benefits you can put on hold until they return to work
  • Who pays the premiums required for healthcare benefits for employees on leave
  • Why the rules are different if you're part of a multi-employer health plan
  • The legal pitfalls involved in designating time off as FMLA or CFRA leave
  • The steps you must take when docking the pay of a worker on leave to avoid problems with FMLA, CFRA, FLSA, and related regulations
  • How a recent court ruling will affect the way you calculate and pay bonuses for workers on FMLA/CFRA leave
